It’s the best time of the year if you’re a sports fan, with just about every major sport going on for the next few weeks. But even better than that, is being a Philadelphia sports fan at the moment. The Phillies are in the NLDS, the Eagles are 6-0 and look like the best the NFL, the Sixers look promising, and the Flyers are off to a 2-0 start. Appreciate it while it’s here because as a sports fan I would die to be in that position.
The Flyers are off to a good start, after having a disappointing 2021-2022 season. After being one of the worst teams in the NHL last year, there may be some hope. John Tortorella took over as the Flyers coach and he is defensive minded, which in my opinion, is going to change the culture back to where it used to be. He will have his guys doing all the little things, such as blocking pucks and back checking which directly leads towards wins. Opponents are going to have to earn their 2 points each night, which again will lead to a better season for the Flyers. I am not going to lie and say that they are contenders, but I think they will surprise some people this year, and if one thing’s for sure, Tortorella will get the most out of his guys and they will take a huge step in the right direction.
In addition to that, Carter Hart will have a bounce back season, and show that he is an elite goaltender. On the offensive end Travis Konecny is a guy that has started off hot with three goals in his first two games. Expect him to have another good season, but because they are going to be a defensive minded team, they are going to grind out games and wear down their opponents which isn’t always flashy, but is the recipe for winning hockey.
The Panthers on the other hand are looking to repeat what they did last season after winning the President’s Trophy. They had a disappointing end to their season where they got embarrassed by the Lightning, but they still have some good pieces, and the addition of Matthew Tkachuk will be huge for them. Because they have moved some guys around and have new additions, it might take them a little bit longer to figure it out but, they are still very much cup contentenders.
I expect this game to be extremely physical, and I think it will be closer than most people might think. That being said, I think it is a bad time to bet against any Philly sports team, especially a hockey team that has started out hot. I am taking the Flyers in this one.
