What do you get when you put a number one seed that has been surging the whole season against a number nine seed that has been flailing? Probably whatever the heck is gonna happen between the Timberwolves and the Nuggets on Wednesday night. The Nuggets are winning this game, so just do yourself a favor and don’t overthink it.
The Timberwolves have been, in every sense of the word, a failure this season. They traded the entire farm for Rudy Gobert during this past off-season. And don’t get me wrong, he’s been averaging his double-double this season and leading the team in boards as he does it, but there has been pretty much zero chemistry for this team. When the start lineup has been healthy for this team, they’ve almost been worse than when the starting lineup isn’t healthy. In this day and age, the double big lineup just doesn’t work, and the Timberwolves are just the latest example as to why.
The Nuggets, on the other hand, have the second-best team in all of the NBA right now, and it’s not really close. Nikola Jokic has been putting in a very solid resume together as to why he should be in consideration for a back-to-back-to-back MVP. He’s been averaging pretty much a triple-double across the season so far, with 24.7 points per game, 10.9 rebounds per game, and 9.8 assists per game. Oh, and now he’s apparently hitting step-back game-winning triples. So that’s pretty unfair. And unlike last season, this Nuggets team isn’t Jokic dragging them to the playoffs. Denver’s front office has actually surrounded Jokic with some great three-point shooters, and the second-best player on the team has gotten himself healthy. When you give Jokic players like Bones Hyland and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to outlet the ball to, that have been shooting 40% and 47% from three-point land, respectively, there isn’t much a team can do to beat the Nuggets.
