We’ve got a huge matchup in the Big East on Thursday with a matchup between Xavier and UConn. Both teams are coming off big wins in their last games – Xavier beat Georgetown on Saturday, while UConn took down Butler. In their last meeting, the Musketeers took down the Huskies in a 83-73 victory at home. Xavier’s record is 16-4, and they’re 8-1 during conference play, with a shocking loss to DePaul last week. UConn has fared similarly this season with an overall record of 16-5, but they’ve not played as well in conference, as they’ve hit a 5-5 record in the Big East. Xavier’s got the higher ranking at thirteen in the country, but UConn has a strong team at nineteen in the country ranking. The Big East is one of the better conferences in college basketball, and with these teams have already played each other once this season, we’re in for a tight game Thursday.

Xavier’s strength comes from their senior class and the talents of Souley Boum (who has cooled down a bit in recent games), Jack Nunge, and Adam Kunkel, and they’ve shown they have a huge ability to put up big points, averaging about 83 a game. Their downfall has been in their inability to stop points from being scored, which is what UConn does better. The Huskies don’t quite have the same scoring capabilities, though (it still ain’t half bad, however), averaging just shy of 80 points per game, which comes from the talent of Adam Sanogo, Jordan Hawkins, and Alex Karaban, a freshman. It seems doubtful that Xavier will be able to pull off another win against a really strong inter-conference team in UConn, especially with the line set at 8 points in favor of UConn. Xavier has the capability to put up huge points in this game, but what’s been missing from the team lately has been the power to limit their opponents from scoring. UConn may not be quite as dominant as the Musketeers when it comes to scoring, but they’re a better defensive team and close enough that, though they may not cover the eight point spread, they’ll take the win against Xavier.
