It’s Dallas week…and this time, the Jalen Hurts-less Eagles travel to Jerry’s world to take on a Cowboys team that’s championship hopes are melting faster than, well…their owner’s face. After losing to the Jaguars last week and barely beating a down-and-out Texans team the week before, the Cowboys seem to be falling apart. But what exactly is going wrong? While Trevor Lawrence is having a substantially better second half this season, we are talking about a Jacksonville team that hadn’t beaten an NFC opponent since 2018. The Jaguars’ 503 yards were the most allowed by Dallas this season. They only sacked Lawrence once and gave up eight third-down conversions (also their most this season). Dallas’ defensive struggles come down to injuries and fatigue. The absence of defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, who suffered a pectoral strain against the Texans, gave way to the Jaguars running over Dallas like they were Caitlyn Jenner behind the wheel of a Lexus after too many glasses of chardonnay. The loss of Hankins and an injury to Leighton Vander Esch took out two of their most effective defenders. It doesn’t matter how talented Micah Parsons is; the Cowboys have so many injuries along their defense that, at this point, even the few starters they started the season with are fatigued. This is not the defense Dallas had when experts
Gardner Minshew is no Jalen Hurts, but he IS one of (if not the best) backup quarterbacks in the NFL, and he will carve up a depleted Cowboys defense without a drop of sweat falling off of his mustache. The Eagles run the ball more than almost any team in football, and Dallas is struggling mightily against the run. It’s not rocket science to figure out that Nick Sirianni will most likely run it down the Cowboys’ throats and then establish the pass-through play-action (Philadelphia has been this better than anyone all year). The Cowboys’ offense is still competent, but Philadelphia’s defense is more challenging to score on than a catholic girl whose parents are home. As a team, the Eagles now have 55 sacks, most in the NFL, quite a turnaround from last year’s anemic 29. They are just seven away from the franchise record of 62. Earlier this season, Philadelphia’s weakness was their defense against the run, but the Eagles have shut down Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and Justin Fields over the past month. Before the Jalen Hurts injury news broke, the Eagles were favored in this game by a point. Vegas now likes Dallas -6, but that’s quite frankly disrespectful because the Eagles will win this game straight up. Gardner Minshew will come into this start with a huge chip on his shoulder after the sudden passing of his college coach and mentor, Mike Leach, and Philadelphia will put Dallas in their place.
