Life is hard. Life is not getting the promotion at work even though you deserve it. It’s getting ghosted on Hinge after you paid for the first date or mentally breaking down as you navigate adulthood. We are surrounded by corrupt, incompetent politicians, most of whom hide the truth from us, and every day, more and more people become hopeless. But on Saturday, football begins. From Saturday until February, we will all put our energy into a team representing our city and who we are. There’s no better feeling in the world than waking up with Scott Hanson’s face on your TV after you spent too much money at the bar last night. And for the first time, Kansans can LEGALLY bet on their teams. And when your team has Patrick Mahomes on it, you basically have passive income.
The Chiefs are the second favorites to win the Super Bowl, which should be no surprise. Andy Reid loves winning more than he loves eating the last strands of pulled pork stuck in his teeth. Letting go of Tyreek Hill was a smart move, especially since he didn’t end up playing for a divisional rival. Rather than make Hill the highest-paid receiver in NFL history, the Chiefs gained cap space this offseason by dealing him to the Dolphins and collecting draft chips in 2022 and 2023 to spend on cheap, controllable talent. The Chiefs have more offensive weapons than the CEO of Raytheon, and they added two more this offseason with the acquisitions of Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdez-Scantling. On defense, the Chiefs will be better than they were last year (mainly because they don’t have Daniel Sorensen…just kidding). It should be no surprise then that half of the Chiefs’ ten draft picks were used on their secondary, which had a stunning glow-up this offseason with the additions of Washington CB Trent McDuffie and Justin Reid. As good as the Chiefs were last year, they reloaded, and I think we might just see Jackson Mahomes Tik Tok his way to a Super Bowl…just hopefully not at Arrowhead.
While the Chiefs will get most of the attention, Kansas State football looks to build off of a decent year last year. Adrian Martinez can’t throw like Skylar Thompson, but that’s a good thing on a team where the biggest question marks lie on the offensive line. Last year, their defense was better than their offense. It finished third in the Big 12, was good enough to hold on against the stronger passing teams, and allowed just 21 points per game- which means something in the Big 12. While they lost some talent on that side of the ball, they’re always great at restocking. Kansas State has star power, from Deuce Vaughn to Felix Anudike-Uzomah, and the Wildcats had more players on the preseason All-Big 12 team than any other school. Add in a strong 2023 recruiting class where they nailed every great player in the state down, and you have a team that has a real shot at winning the Big 12. They are everyone’s dark horse team this year, you might as well throw a few bucks on them.
I would talk about Kansas football, but there’s no need to get depressing. Kansans far and wide, let’s have a great football season and be sure to take advantage of FanDuel’s amazing Bet $5 & Get $150 free offer!
