The NBA is back in full swing and looks to be as good as it has ever been. What does the NBA have in store this year?
LA goes from LeBron to Luka
For years, fans have dreaded the day that LeBron hangs up his sneakers and calls it a career. Personally, I think that happens after next season for two reasons. The first is that LeBron, respectfully, is a huge attention seeker and would need to have a Derek Jeter-type retirement send-off. The second, and probably more important to him, is that he wants to get another ring. But fans are already accepting Luka as the new face in LA, and it’s possible the Lakers’ new ownership buys into Luka more than LeBron.
Steph Curry needs five
A slightly less talked about ring hunt currently exists in the Bay Area. There is no question that Steph Curry is still a perennial player, and if he isn’t the best point guard in the league, he’s easily top three. But Curry is very sneakily the ninth-oldest player in the NBA and is closing in on turning 38. The Warriors have responded to their all-time franchise player’s aging with roster moves that aim to get Steph his fifth ring. It will be up to guys like Jimmy Butler, Jonathan Kuminga, and Al Horford to see if they can support Steph well enough.
The Thunder are just getting started
The Thunder proved once and for all that the multitude of trades they made in the mid to late 2010s were exceptionally fruitful, as they got their first ring last year. Shortly afterward, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signed the most lucrative contract in NBA history, which will see him making almost a million dollars per game by the end of it. But what’s really scary about the Thunder is that almost every player returned from last year’s roster. They are off to an 8-1 start and look like the favorites to win the championship for the second straight year.
What about the East?
The NBA has seemingly reverted back to its power dynamics that made up the 2010s. That is to say, the West is exponentially better than the East. The loss of Tatum for the year means Boston is nowhere near the contender fans thought they would be. The Knicks still have not found their footing, nor have Giannis and the Bucks. How do you know the East is bad? The two top teams at the time of writing this article are the Bulls and the Pistons. Only time will tell if that stays true the whole year.
