The Rock is one of the highest paid actors in the universe. His movies often crush at the box office. That doesn’t always mean they are good. And, hopefully, he is starting to see that.
In a recent interview, Johnson said that between he and his business partner, Hiram Garcia, they have said no to a handful of sequels — that no one needed.
“We’re very calculating in what [stories] we want to tell, but, look, if our studio partners had their ways, they want a Journey 2: Mysterious Island sequel, they want a San Andreas sequel, they want a Rampage sequel,” Garcia told Collider last week. “It’s like all of those movies, the studio was clamoring for a sequel, but we felt collectively, ‘Look, we told a great version of the story. Now, we want to go to tell another story somewhere else.'”
Did anyone actually want a Journey 2? San Andreas 2? or Rampage 2?
I for sure didn’t … hell, I didn’t want a Rampage, let alone a consideration for a second. Goodness.
Recently, Johnson told Vin Diesel to leave him the hell alone about more Fast movies.
While Garcia says that Jumanji and his DC role as Black Adam could lead to many more projects.
“[Jumanji] is a big one for us that we definitely want to be able to come back and tell that third movie,” Garcia said.
“We have very big plans, obviously, for the DC Universe, if the fans perceive the way we want. We have a lot of stories planned for that,” Garcia said to Collider. “But it is a challenge of balancing, ‘Okay, what are the sequels we’re going to do,’ because we’ve been very fortunate that the majority of the projects we’ve done, there’s been a request for sequel, and his availability has always been the thing that made it a challenge.”
Johnson may finally be starting to be selective about his sequel decisions, The Rock is still out here making a TON of movies.
In 2021 alone, he starred in Disney’s Jungle Cruise and Netflix’s Red Notice. He also appeared on NBC’s Young Rock — a sitcom inspired by his life.
In 2022, he is the voice of Krypto in DC League of Super-Pets, as well as the aforementioned Black Adam, which opens on July 29.
The Rock has also been developing The King, a biopic about King Kamehameha, the man who united the Hawaiian islands.
Ultimately, go for it … but also… thank you for stopping some of those awful projects.
