Scream (Five) had a successful run in the box office this year, as the franchise dropped its numerology to revive a somewhat dead brand.
The nostalgia play landed just right and has earned more than $100 million at the global box office, and secured a surprisingly high 78% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With that success comes the obvious sequel opportunity. And… alas… it is happening.
“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family,” Paramount and Spyglass said in a joint statement.
Radio Silence added, “Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.”
Scream (6?) is officially happening, folks.
The new movie will slash its way into theaters in one year, on March 31, 2023.
Its next act is scheduled to begin filming later this year, according to a report from THR. The movie will be directed by familiar participants Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — who also helmed Scream (5) — and will be working from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.
In the new Scream film audiences were re-introduced to previous cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette who have to keep up with Woodsboro slasher, Ghostface.
Unlike the OG, Dewey (Arquette) is no longer sheriff of Woodsboro, but has to contact Sidney (Campbell) after a murder that it all-too-familiar to the first Scream, to tell her “it’s happening” again…
Scream (5) also brought back Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks from Scream 4, to keep dipping into nostalgia and fanservice moments. The franchise did introduce Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Sonia Ben Ammar, and Kyle Gallner to get the next sequence rolling.
If you are into it… get ready for more Scream‘ing.
