In April, Tyrann Mathieu visited with Philadelphia and New Orleans after the Kansas City Chiefs signed Justin Reid from free agency earlier this year. Mathieu was expected to sign with the Saints sooner, but nothing materialized before the draft. With the Saints not drafting a safety over the weekend and Malcolm Jenkins retirement along with Marcus Williams signing with the Ravens, their need for a safety loomed large. Ian Rappaport reported today that Mathieu is expected to head to New Orleans.
Mathieu, who is from New Orleans, will soon by thirty and will be entering his tenth season in the NFL since being drafted in 2013 by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round out of LSU. Mathieu is a two-time All-Pro safety and Pro Bowler with twenty-six interceptions in his NFL career – half of them in the last three seasons. He’s got a lot left, and he will be a huge factor into the Saints’ defense in the 2022 NFL season.
