If you are anything like me you are seeing ‘Peacemaker’ ads on everything. Twitter, Facebook, Insta, YouTube, TikTok… goodness, literally, everything I scroll it is there.
I had no idea what the hell it was — other than John Cena being involved — and so (because I am still at my parents house for a few days) I did some research for myself, and now you.
Peacemaker is a sequel that picks up directly from the events of The Suicide Squad, with Cena’s anti-hero/supervillain role continuing to work for the government as an assassin — after surviving being shot at by Deadshot (Idris Elba) and having a building fall on him — so, some classic comicbook stuff…
Anyways…
Cena’s character is so obsessed with “peace” that his job is essentially him killing whoever the government wants, in the name of peace. Though, this new version of Peacemaker is struggling with his moral compass after murdering Rick Flag (Joel Kinnamen) in The Suicide Squad.
Peacemaker, essentially, believes in achieving peace no matter the cost, or who he has to kill to get it… so that is kind of his thing? The HBO Max series will follow him as he tries to do this, alongside several government agents.
James Gunns, the director, said it would also tackle some of the issues of today…. which means it will have someone as a Donald Trump-esque character, most certainly.
“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” Gunn explained when the series was announced. “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
There are also plenty of other actors joining Cena on Peacemaker. Most all of them will be familiar to you if you saw The Suicide Squad with Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt) and Steve Agee (John Economos). Joining them will be Danielle Brooks (Leota Adebayo), Robert Patrick (Auggie Smith), Chris Conrad (Vigilante), Christopher Heyerdahl (Captain Locke), Chukwudi Iwuji (Clemson Murn), Lochlyn Munro (Larry Fitzgibbon), and Annie Chang (Sophie Song).
So… now you know a little bit more about the HBO Max show that is clogging your timeline.
