In case you missed them, here are a few blogs that covered the Henry Ruggs car crash in which he, driving under the influence, killed a twenty-three-year-old woman, Tina Tintor, and her dog. The quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, Derek Carr, recently spoke regarding the situation.
He also did an interview that was posted to ESPN’s Instagram earlier today, in which he said, “He needs people to love him right now. He’s probably feeling a certain way about himself right now, and he needs to be loved. If no one else will do it, I’ll do it.”
There are many on Twitter who are critiquing Derek Carr for his thoughts on the situation, saying that he should have condemned drinking and driving given his position to speak on the matter, but anyone who really reads the statement and watches him speak on the matter will see that Carr is simply trying to figure everything out himself, too.
He lost his coach earlier this year, and he has now lost a teammate, someone he considers a really close friend. Of course, we all know Henry Ruggs is at fault in the entire situation. He made the truly terrible decision to drink and drive and it cost someone her life. There’s no other way to put it. It’s absolutely horrible. But getting angry at Derek Carr for not really knowing how to feel about the situation and for wanting to be there for his friend is just ridiculous. He said clearly that no one ever wants to see anything like that happen, but he also is very clearly trying to be there for a friend – a friend who made a terrible, stupid, selfish, disastrous mistake, but still a friend. Derek Carr seems like a good dude. Lay off of him.
