Naomi Judd died on April 30th, 2022 at the age of 76, and until this morning, the details of her death were not made public except for the death being a result of mental illness. On Good Morning America this morning, though, in an interview with Diane Sawyer, Ashley Judd, Naomi’s daughter, revealed the details of her mother’s tragic death.

“She used a weapon, a firearm. So that’s the piece of information we’re very uncomfortable sharing,” Ashley Judd told Sawyer. She and her sister, Wynonna, had previously kept the matter private, but in an effort to bring awareness to mental illness, they decided to tell the world the cause of death. Naomi took her life just one day before she and Wynonna were to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame for their work in their band “The Judds.”

Ashley and Wynonna both attended the awards ceremony to accept the induction and honored their mother at the even. Speaking on the timing of her mother’s death, Ashely Judd said, “That is the level of catastrophe of what was going on inside of her because the barrier between the regard in which they held her couldn’t penetrate into her heart and the lie the disease told her was so convincing.”

There will be a memorial for Naomi Judd on Sunday, televised by CMT.
