The good news: A Sixteen Candles-inspired TV show is on the way.
The bad news: It is about as loosely based as you could imagine.
Deadline is reporting that Peacock will launch 15 Candles, a “reconfiguration” of the John Hughes classic. Suffice it to say that it is making some huge changes from the original, as the name implies.
The half-hour series will tell the story of “four young Latinas starting high school as they overcome their feelings of invisibility while exploring what it means to leave childhood behind through the lens of the traditional female coming-of-age rite: the quinceañera.”
15 Candles — for the 15th birthday, if you didn’t take freshman Spanish — is being developed by Selena Gomez, Tanya Saracho, and Gabriela Revilla Lugo.
There’s no word on whether or not Gomez will have an acting role (or even a cameo) in 15 Candles.
Sixteen Candles was a massive success both by critical reviews as well as financial success and one of the most beloved of all of the Hughes films.
The original starred Molly Ringwald as Samantha, a 15-year-old girl not excited about her impending Sweet 16 birthday due to the chaos caused by her sister’s wedding.
To make life worse, she has a crush on Jake (Michael Schoeffling), a senior at her high school, but she’s afraid that he won’t like her because she is a virgin. While dealing with all of this, she is also constantly trying to avoid Ted (Anthony Michael Hall), a nerd — who is super weird upon re-watching this movie.
(Can we talk about how that was the plot of a movie, or nah?)
Anyways, 15 Candles is trying to get some attention by including Hughes’ name on the show. How successful this show will be is TBD.
