Something you may not know about me is that I run all of the TSM social media accounts. Humble brag, but it adds context…any who, today TFM made this meme about girl dorm decor:

Is it funny? Absolutely. Is it accurate? Maybe, if this were 2016.

Unlike boys, us girls are a lot better at following trends and making our dorm rooms a dorm ~home~. I understand that we tend to all decorate the same way, but at least we keep up with the times.

In the past few years, girls dorm decor has drastically shifted from this:

To this:

I remember the summer going into my freshman year I was freaking out about what to buy, what I’ll need, and what I’ll forget to buy when I need it. So, I decided to take it upon myself to be every girl’s big and provide you with a condensed list of small things that you might want to get for your dorm.

Picture Collage

This one is available for $30 on Etsy, but I think it’s a fun project to make these yourself with things that you personally enjoy. It’s basically a YOU statement piece that tells a story about who you are and what you like. It will make your dorm feel less like a prison and more like a place you want to go back to. This collage will basically become the center of your dorm’s aesthetic.

Ring Light Stand

This one isn’t technically a decoration item but I think it’s a great idea…hear me out. Most dorms have trash lighting so when you’re taking pictures it would be great to have a ring light. So why a ring light stand? You’ll be able to take a group picture before going out without leaving anyone out. It’s an all around win win.

Funny Tapestry

Design tapestries are sooooo 7 years ago. Find a funny one that you and your roommate can agree with. It makes for a solid IG background. (This is also from Etsy)

LED Lights

I personally hate these, but everyone has them. Makes the pregames in your room feel like you’re already 3 jungle juices in at a frat basement.

Bedding That Matches Your Aesthetic

Bedding can be expensive but when it comes to shopping for your dorm I insist that you splurge on it. A great tip is to stick to solid colors or mix and match patterns. But keep in mind that you should try to avoid buying white sheets, pillows, and blankets…for obvious reasons. Also, it is important to get something that is comfortable because you will spend a majority of your time in that bed.

Neon Signs

Neon signs can be really expensive but there are some that aren’t. Five Below, Amazon, and Target all usually have a lot of cheap options that are worth checking out. Granted, you’ll be a basic bitch if you get the lightening bolt, but who gives a fuck…it’s your room.

Visitor Wall

Hopefully come fall, COVID will be a thing of the past. So you won’t need to worry about having too many people in and out of your room. I think it’s a great idea to keep a visitor picture wall either behind your door or in substitute for your picture collage. At the end of the year it will be fun to look back on all the people who visited your small little space.
