Christopher Nolan may be directing the next James Bond movie.
Seriously? Yes
While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz to promote his new film Oppenheimer, Nolan was asked about potentially headlining the next 007 installment. While answering indirectly, Nolan never discouraged the idea, even noting how big of a fan he is of the franchise.
“The influence of those movies in my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. It would be an amazing privilege to do one,” Nolan told Horowitz.
However, Nolan continued, it would need to be the right point in his career. “At the same time, when you take on a character like that you’re working with a particular set of constraints,” he said. “It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong.”
Although Nolan never mentioned if he is presently at that point, he specified he would basically require full creative control. “You wouldn’t want to take on a film without being fully committed to what you bring to the table creatively,” he explained. “So as a writer, casting, everything — it’s a full package.”
Despite his confidence to deliver a Bond film with totality, Nolan understands producers may be wary to relinquish their roles. Regardless, Nolan would still be a fan of the franchise. “You’d have to be really needed and wanted in terms of bringing the totality of what you bring to a character. Otherwise, I’m very happy to be first in line to see whatever they do.”
Not a new conversation
Directing a 007 film has been brought up to the Dark Knight filmmaker before. Back in 2017 while making press rounds for Tenet, Nolan said he “would definitely” be interested in making a Bond movie. Additionally, he even stated that he keeps in contact with the series’ producers.
“I’ve spoken to the producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson over the years. I deeply love the character, and I’m always excited to see what they do with it,” he said. “Maybe one day that would work out.”
Speaking for movie fans everywhere, we really hope it works out. A Christopher Nolan 007 film would be nothing short of epic. This man is genuinely destined to write and direct one of these movies. Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Broccoli should have no problem giving him full control. That is, unless they hate money.
As for Nolan’s current project Oppenheimer, which details the story of the infamous Manhattan Project, critics are calling the film Nolan’s magnum opus. The film is set to release tomorrow, July 21.
