Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are embarking on an exciting venture with the launch of the Tiger Woods Golf League (TGL), an indoor golf league that has the potential to become a massive success. Here is some of the framework of this new league.
TGL brings together six teams consisting of three PGA Tour players each, competing in 18-hole golf matches every Monday night. The action takes place inside a sprawling 135,000-square-foot arena in Palm Beach, Florida. The golfers will showcase their skills by hitting long-distance shots into a simulator, like the ones you see at Golf Galaxy, before heading to the indoor course and transitioning to a short-game area for chipping, bunker shots, and putting.
The star power of TGL is simply phenomenal, with golfing legends like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who have started this league. While they are headlining the league, they are joined by an impressive lineup of current tour players including Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa, to name a few. TGL has smartly planned its season to run from January to April 2024, avoiding direct competition with the NBA and NHL regular season games.
Tiger saw all the media attention on LIV and PGA and decided to push his new league that is starting in January of next year. I am excited to see how they pull this off because I feel like there is a big audience for them to highlight the personalities of some of these golfers. The Netflix show “Full Swing” was a major success and highlighted the behind-the-scenes and colorful personalities that some of these golfers have.
A mixture of mic’d-up moments and some talented athletes hitting some cool golf shots could be very entertaining to watch. I hope they don’t make it too serious with competition and highlight trying to introduce golfers to non-golf fans while growing the game of golf.
