Even though we all just shelled out $60 to buy Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. just decided they aren’t done making money off of the Harry Potter franchise quite yet. This of course comes from the news that there is reportedly a show in the works at HBO to remake the original franchise, with each book supposedly receiving its own season. The idea here is that having an entire season to go over each book will allow the creators to dive deeper into the source material than the movies did.
I’m not a die-hard Harry Potter fan by any means. I went through the first 20 years of my life thinking Hogwarts was an std. But I’ve since seen the movies and think the remake is going to be nothing short of a butchering of those films. I’ve been told there is a lot more detail in the books than the movies show, but I also know there are a lot of things from the movies that are going to be WAY worse in the series. Good luck finding a dorky trio of 12-year-olds willing to sign away their childhood that have half as much charm as the original group. Not to mention the impossible task of replacing the actors who became so iconic as Snape, Voldemort, Sirius Black, and the biggest teddy bear of all time in Hagrid. Every single one of those characters will be worse than their movie counterparts.
I was open to a remake of the Harry Potter franchise, don’t get me wrong. I think the obvious way to do it though would be to make a PG-13, Superbad/Harry Potter crossover type of show. Let Harry use the invisibility cloak to sneak into the girl’s bathroom. Let Ron’s brothers become the official Hogwarts drug dealers. Make Voldemort the most sexually depraved guy since Buffalo Bill. I don’t know, I’m just spit balling here, but I truly believe there is gold in there somewhere. It’s certainly better than whatever the show is going to look like.
Silver lining to this announcement: I’m really excited to see what character HBO gives Pedro Pascal. I’m sure he’ll kill it.
