Josh Allen was announced as the cover of Madden 24 and honestly no one really cares except for the Bills Mafia and 12-year-olds.
Look, congrats to Joshua. He definitely deserves it. As one of the best quarterbacks in the league and a movie quote fanatic, it’s hard not to root for him. Yet honestly, no one really gives a shit about the Madden cover anymore.
It’s not Josh’s fault. You’d have to imagine that whoever Madden asks to be on the cover says yes. But with the game never truly making any big changes between editions as well as always having some wonky gameplay errors, Madden is beginning to fade out of the video game community. I mean, obviously Madden will never disappear. I’m just saying people have stopped buying every single Madden year after year as we’ve all started to realize that they’re always the same. Sure, rosters are different but with downloadable rosters, you can always figure out a way to update them no as long as you have at least Madden 20.
With no one really rushing out to buy the new game, the big news here is the infamous Madden Curse. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Madden Curse states that whoever is on the cover of Madden will inevitably get injured or have some career altering event occur during the season. We’ve seen this happen with Antonio Brown who left the Steelers and ruined his career in 2018 after being on the Madden 19 cover. Rob Gronkowski only played in six games due to injury when he was on the cover. Peyton Hillis left the NFL seemingly in the middle of his Madden year. Even people like Patrick Mahomes have been affected by the curse as he missed two games due to an ankle injury during his first Madden cover stint (although he did go on to win the Super Bowl, so who knows).
The point is that being on the cover puts you at greater risk of something happening. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s occurred enough to keep an eye on it.
As for Josh Allen, I hope everything will be okay and he is still able to bash on Bill Belichick, Ayahuasca Rodgers, and the rest of the AFC East. For Bills fans, go out and celebrate this like everything else you do — jump through tables, drink a bunch of beer, and encourage your children to act the same.
