Let’s talk about how smart Lebron is and I swear nobody ever gives him credit for it. After getting swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, Lebron said “I’ve got a lot to think about” when asked about his future. Let me tell you why this is the smartest PR play of all time.
Love him or hate him, Lebron is the biggest name in basketball and I would argue Top-5 most known athlete in the world. So while he’s getting destroyed in the conference finals, his business mind is working double time. How do you get the media’s attention away from getting swept and hurting your “GOAT” status? Tell everyone you’re considering retirement.
I still think he might “retire”, take the year off to get healthy, and then join whatever team Bronny (his son) gets drafted to. More than likely, he is going to suit up next year for the Lakers and make another title run to avenge the Mickey Mouse title from 2020.
I am totally not a Lebron hater, I just love hating. I choose players in every sport with the most loyal fans and choose to go against them. JJ Watt was my guy in the NFL for a while and Ronaldo is my GOAT in soccer. Just good old sports banter never hurt anybody and I personally think it is healthy to argue about stuff like this.
If you don’t think he is a genius already, let’s talk about the other times that Lebron has marketed himself like a true GOAT.
Joining the Heat: I will never forget the “The Decision”. Normal free agents will make a funny video or just let the team announce it. Nah. Not Lebron. The King has to have his own TV special regarding where he will play for the next couple of years of his career. He was so smart to do it at the beginning of July because there was literally no other sports-related content.
Space Jam 2: What a terrible movie but guess what? Michael did it so Lebron did it. Not only did he make it about himself, but he also involved his kids in it. That’s true GOAT status.
Minority Ownership: How do you get your name relevant across the pond? Invest some money into Premier League Soccer. I promise you that Lebron couldn’t name 3 players on the Liverpool roster on any given day, but he is still an owner and all those Liverpool fans adore him.
While writing this blog, I came to a pivotal moment in my life. I actually like Lebron. He might be the corniest athlete in America, but I love it.
